Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
